Notification basics

About notifications and sound profiles

Sound profiles define how your BlackBerry device notifies you of calendar and task reminders, and incoming messages, calls, and browser content. Your device has seven preloaded sound profiles: Loud, Medium, Silent, Vibrate Only, Normal, Phone Calls Only, and All Alerts Off.

You can create custom sound profiles so you can set different notification options for different items, set ring tones, or set the volume for notification. If you set notification volume to Escalating, the notification volume gradually increases.

You can also assign ring tones and notifications to specific contacts in your contact list so that phone calls and messages from the contact are unique.

Change your ring tone

  1. In the sounds application, click Set Ring Tones/Alerts.
  2. Click the application or item that you want to change.
  3. Perform one of the following actions:
    • To use a preloaded ring tone, in the Ringtone field, click a ring tone.
    • To use a ring tone that you downloaded, in the Ringtone field, click Browse. Navigate to a folder that contains ring tones. Click a ring tone.

Notifications troubleshooting

My device is vibrating more times than expected

For calls, the number of times that the BlackBerry device vibrates is not determined by the number of vibrations that you set in your sound profile. The device vibrates until the caller or the wireless network ends the connection.

I am not receiving notification for incoming calls or messages

Try performing the following actions:

  • In the sounds application, verify that the All Alerts Off sound profile is not selected.
  • If you have assigned a ring tone or notification to a specific contact, in the notification, verify that the Volume field is not set to Silent.
