Contacts
Add a contact
You must invite contacts to use BlackBerry Messenger before they are added to your BlackBerry Messenger contact list.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Add a Contact.
- Type part or all of the contact name.
- Click the contact.
- If you have turned on invitation passwords and you want to set a password, type an invitation question and answer. Click OK. Otherwise,
click Cancel to continue.
- If you want to add a custom message to your invitation, type a message.
- Click OK.
Turn on invitation passwords
If you turn on invitation passwords, a question and password screen appears each time that you invite a contact. Contacts who answer
your question with the correct invitation password are added to your contact list.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Ask Password Question When Adding Contacts field to Yes.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
To turn off invitation passwords, change the Ask Password Question When Adding Contacts field to No.
Respond to an invitation
- In BlackBerry Messenger, in the Requests group, click an invitation.
- Click one of the following menu items:
- Accept
- Decline
- Remove
Note: If you click Remove, the contact who sent the invitation does not receive confirmation that your email address is a correct email
address.
Turn off invitation forwarding options
If you turn off invitation forwarding, contacts that you invite can only accept invitations from the original email address or PIN that you sent the invitation to.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Allow Forwarding of Requests field to No.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
View a contact's information
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Contact Info.
Rename a contact
When you rename a contact, their custom display name stops appearing on the Contact list screen.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Rename Contact.
- Type a name.
- Click OK.
To view the contact's custom display name again, click Set Original Name.
Delete a contact
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Delete Contact.
Groups
Add a group
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Add Group.
- Type a name for the group.
- Click OK.
Move a contact to a different group
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Move Contact.
- Click a group.
Rename a group
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, highlight a group.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Edit Group.
- Type a name for the group.
- Click OK.
Delete a group
You must move your contacts out of a group before you can delete that group. There must be at least one group in your BlackBerry
Messenger contact list; you cannot delete the last remaining group in your contact list.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, highlight a group.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Delete Group.
Conversations
Start a conversation
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Start Conversation.
- Type a message.
- Press the Enter key.
Open a conversation
Conversations appear in the Conversations group and in the main message list.
In BlackBerry Messenger, in the Conversations group, click a contact.
Add an emoticon
- During a BlackBerry Messenger conversation, press the Emoticon key.
- Click an emoticon.
Send a file to a contact
- During a BlackBerry Messenger conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Send a File.
- Navigate to a folder that contains pictures or audio files.
- Click a file.
Send a voice note to a contact
You can record and send a new voice note to a contact. You cannot save voice notes or send saved voice notes.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Send Voice Note.
- Record a voice note.
- Click Send.
Send a vCard contact attachment
You can send vCard contact attachments of contacts in your BlackBerry Messenger contact list or contacts in the main contact list on
your BlackBerry device.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Forward Contact.
- Perform one of the following options:
- If the contact that you want to forward is in your main contact list, click BlackBerry Contacts. Click a contact.
- If the contact that you want to forward is in your BlackBerry Messenger contact list, click Messenger Contacts. Select one or
more BlackBerry Messenger contacts. Click OK.
Ping a contact
When you ping a contact, the contact's BlackBerry device vibrates.
- During a BlackBerry Messenger conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Ping Contact.
Turn off ping vibration
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Vibrate When Receiving a Ping field to No.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
To turn on ping vibration again, change the Vibrate When Receiving a Ping field to Yes.
Prevent conversations from appearing in the main message list
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Show Conversations in Message List field to No.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Save.
To view conversations in the main message list again, change the Show Conversations in Message List field to Yes.
Start a conference
- In BlackBerry Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Invite to Conference.
- Select one or more BlackBerry Messenger contacts.
- Click OK.
View conference participants
- In BlackBerry Messenger, during a conference, press the Menu key.
- Click View Participants.
Copy a conversation
When you copy a conversation, you can paste it into other BlackBerry device applications.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Copy History.
Clear a conversation
- In BlackBerry Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Clear History.
Send a broadcast message
Broadcast messages that you send appear in all your BlackBerry Messenger conversations. To perform this task, you must have at least
two conversations in the Conversations group.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, in the Conversations group, highlight a contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Broadcast Message.
- Type a message.
- Click OK.
Send your GPS location to a contact
To perform this task, you must set a GPS receiver to use.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click Send My Location.
End a conversation
- In BlackBerry Messenger, during a conversation, press the Menu key.
- Click End Conversation.
Availability
Change your availability status
If you change your availability status to Unavailable, you receive BlackBerry Messenger messages, but you are not notified.
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Edit My Info.
- Click a status.
- If necessary, type a message that contacts can see when they view your contact information.
- Click Save.
Change your display name
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Edit My Info.
- Type a display name.
- Click Save.
Show when you are on the phone
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Allow On The Phone presence status field to Yes.
To stop showing when you are on the phone, change the Allow On The Phone presence status field to No.
Show when you are listening to an audio file
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, press the Menu key.
- Click Options.
- Change the Allow Now Playing presence status field to Yes.
To stop showing when you are listening to an audio file, change the Allow Now Playing presence status field to No.
Receive notification when a contact becomes available
- In BlackBerry Messenger, on the Contact list screen, highlight an unavailable contact.
- Press the Menu key.
- Click Set Alert.
